1997 Diamante Come Back Together

Alternator was bad - I pulled it this morning and brought it to Advanced Auto parts. $160 for a new one, and they said it was not serviceable. Didn’t order a new one - I brought it home, pulled the connector housing off (two screws) and found some corrosion, and a stuck spring. Cleaned and lubed with dialectic. Brought it to AutoZone tonight and it passed all tests. It's not the original alternator - it's a BOSCH - maybe the Mitsubishi ones are not serviceable (?).

Advanced Auto parts tester was pretty good- showed what the part was putting out for current, diode health, etc. Autozone's was way more modern - touch screen, which lit up with all greens.

Since my original post, I've pulled the plenum, valve covers and radiator. The valve covers were loose and have been leaking - the engine from that point down + transmission was completely caked with grease. All the rockers and cams look good though.

I found a lot of cracked hoses. I think the engine has been run over temperature (maybe that nice warm blanket of grease) because a lot of the hoses seemed to have lost their flexibility. I replace a few bad ones (hopefully my evap/surge problem codes solved).

So, with a lot of degreaser and my pressure washer, I've got the engine nice and clean. I was easy to get at the engine with the radiator out and the plenum off, and from underneath – jacking the car up about a foot and a half.

I replaced the spark plugs while I had the plenum off. They needed it too - not much tip left. Two cylinders had oil around the plugs from the loose valve covers. That wasn't helping anything I'm sure. All clean now.

I've got the top of the engine mostly back together now. I'll finish that, put the freshly tested alternator back in, reinstall the radiator and fill the cooling system tomorrow. Hopefully all this will silence some of the bells and whistles.

1997 Diamante Has Valve Covers Removed

Here is the engine bay again, but now the valve covers are removed. The entire intake, including the throttle and plenum are gone too. All of my rocker arms and cam shafts seem to be in good order (pfew). The valve covers were loose- I could take the bolts off with my hands. Most of the spark plugs were pretty loose too. There was a lot of oil around the plugs – one cylinder had so much you couldn’t see the top of the spark plug. The other end of the plugs were in just as bad a condition. Hopefully the rough running can be attributed mostly to all this.

97 Diamante Engine Bay Degrease

Before I start working under the hood, I figured I would blast it clean with the pressure washer. I sprayed everything with “grease lightning”, let it sit for 5 minutes, started the engine and then blasted everything with the various pressure washer nozzles. I pulled the plastic cover while it was going and blasted under there too. Then I let it run for 30 minutes to help dry things up.
